Fly Fishing the Wood River

Fly Fishing the Wood River

The Wood River is more than a Western spring creek misplaced in southwestern Rhode Island. Her size and placid runs are more like my favorite rivers in the Rockies than like her many sisters in New England. She is as beautiful as the big browns and rainbows holding in her pools and tiny riffles. The "Wood," as she is affectionately referred to, has been, for the last ten years especially, a brown trout river supreme. Her bottom is easy to wade, copper and gold color gravel and stone are the case most of the time.

She is abundant in insect life, a caddis river, yet hosts good Black Quills, Hendrickson's, Gray Fox, Mahogany Duns, Blue Wing Olive's, and a few more mayfly hatches. The Giant Mayfly (hexagenia limbata) is the Wood's supreme hatch that anyone who has the good fortune to fish, in the right place, in the right time, will remember forever.

The Wood is thriving. While the old timers compare present-day fishing to the way "it used to be," the river is being managed by the Rhode Island Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited's float stocking has made fishing on the Wood River fantastic all season long.

We offer on-stream fly fishing instruction. Our philosophy allows you the opportunity to choose how and where you want to fish. We are of course ready, willing, and able to consult with you in that decision. When we work for you, you are our main concern, and we will work hard to make your day of fly fishing with us a memorable one. You bring what ever gear you may have, and we will do rest.

See Announcement, Reports for News and Fly Fishing Reports. Learn the times and emergence of major hatches on the Wood and other river systems in RI and neighboring states.
