 About Ed Lombardo

ESPN selected 12 of some of the best fly fishers in America to compete in its first Great Outdoor Games Competition, (The Olympics of Fly Fishing) which was held in Lake Placid NY.  Ed Lombardo was one of the twelve competitors. Some of the other competitors were Doug Swisher, Wendy & Terry Gun, and Brian O’Keefe. Ed has more than 45 years’ experience in fly fishing.

Thirty years ago, Ed Lombardo founded The New England School of Fly Fishing at the W. Alton Jones Campus of URI. He is also Chief Fly-Fishing Instructor for Addieville East Farm and Deer Creek Farm, both nationally know shooting and fly-fishing preserves here in Rhode Island.

Ed is a veteran fly-fisher, guide, instructor, and expert fly tier. With over forty year’s experience, he has fished for such diverse species as Trout, Steelhead, Atlantic Salmon, Black Bass, Striped Bass, Bluefish, Bonefish, and False Albacore. He has 33 years’ experience fly-fishing the fabulous Big Horn River, the Yellowstone National Park area, and Spring Creeks of Montana. He has also fished Florida for Tarpon.

He is a professional lecturer, fly fishing writer, amateur entomologist on fly fishing, and writes for both national as well as local print and TV media. Ed is a featured speaker and fly-casting celebrity for The Annual Fly-Fishing Show in Marlboro Ma. and has done the same for 12 years at The Eastern Fishing & Outdoor Expo in Worcester Ma. and 10 years for The Wilmington Fly Fishing Expo as well.  He is also a member of the Narragansett and Northern RI Chapters of Trout Unlimited, Honorary Life Member of United Fly Tiers of RI, Honorary Life Member of the Smithfield Sportsman's Club, long time member of Rhody Fly Rodders and, Trustee Member / of The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association of RI. In 2013 Ed was honored by being awarded the The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association’s highest award, The Trustee Award.  

In 1993 Ed established and coordinated a Fly - Fishing course at the University of Rhode Island's Bay Campus and started a Fly - Fishing School and Program at The W. Alton Jones campus of URI. He has been leading fly-fishing instructor for RI/DEM’S Fish & Wildlife’s Aquatic Education Program now for more than 30 years to the present.  

In 2012 Ed was honored by RI/DEM’S Fish & Wildlife Division, and AEP (Aquatic Education Program) for his untiring work and dedication for more than 22 years of service in teaching thousands of men, woman, and children the Art and Science of Fly Fishing. In addition, Ed has been DEM’s leader and founder for such programs as, Veterans, Veterans with Disabilities, Woman with Cancer, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of R I, Boy and Girl Scouts of RI, Kids Day at Addieville East Farm, Inner-city fishing for Kids, The Fly Fishing Express, a train (The Old Colony Train in Middletown, RI) for an adventure in fly fishing venue along Narragansett’s East Bay, and many more. The 2012 Conservation Trout Stamp has his Adams dry fly which Ed tied and appears on the stamp along with his name.

Back in 1990 when it all started Ed was asked by Christine Dudley, then Senior Biologist and then Coordinator for the RI/DEM’S Fish & Wildlife Division and AEP (Aquatic Education Program) to help with this initiative. Our first program was a fly-tying class in Westerly R I and for many years later many more in the Art and Science of Fly - Fishing! Today and for the passed 14 years or so Ed has been working with Kimberly Sullivan, our new Coordinator for AEP here in R I. Again, more of these great programs for so many, men, woman, children and families to enjoy and be educated. I will tell you it has been an honor and pleasure working with both wonderful ladies Christine and Kimberly for all these years, I consider both family!  

Since 2005 every September Ed has had the honor of teaching the NFL’s New England Patriots the Art and Science of Fly Fishing at The Annual Matt Light Fly Fishing & Shoot Out Fund Raising Event which is held at Addieville East Farm here in RI every year. Players such as Tom Brady, Matt Light, Vince Wilfork, Deion Branch, Wes Welker, Rob Ninkovich, Stevan Ridly, Jerod Mayo, Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Troy Brown, James White, to mention a few.
